Common Reactions to Vaccines

Common Reactions to Vaccines

Most vaccine reactions are mild and self-limiting, meaning the symptoms should resolve on their own within 24 hours without treatment.

Vaccine Reactions In Dogs

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions will be obvious, and your pet will experience facial swelling, raised hives on the skin, or very rarely difficulty breathing or collapse. If your pet is experiencing an allergic reaction to the vaccine, please call our office immediately or go to the nearest emergency hospital.

Vomiting or Diarrhea

If your pet has experienced any vomiting or diarrhea post-vaccine, withhold food and water for 4 hours, then try offering a small amount of bland diet (2-3 parts white rice to 1 part plain boiled chicken) every 3-4 hours. If vomiting persists, please call our office immediately. For diarrhea, you can mix in 1 teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin and probiotics with each meal. If diarrhea persists or becomes bloody, please call our office.

Soreness or Pain

Soreness or pain is a common symptom after a vaccination. This should resolve in 12-24 hours. We can have you pick up a courtesy dose of anti-inflammatory pain medication if they are uncomfortable.

Lumps or Bumps

Post-vaccination, a small, firm bump may develop at the spot where the needle was injected into the skin. This is a normal reaction; however, it’s important to watch to ensure that the bump doesn’t continue to grow or show signs of infection, such as becoming inflamed, oozing, or becoming more painful. The lump should gradually disappear. If the lump shows signs of becoming infected or hasn’t disappeared after several weeks, contact your veterinarian.
